Safety modifications of seniors’ homes help save on medical costs

Studies have shown that living at home is better for the mental health of seniors, who are happier in a familiar environment where they can live independently. John Hopkins University has received a $4.1 million grant from Medicare to help 500 elderly people by making household repairs and improvements. The cost averages $3,000 per home and research has shown it can help keep seniors at home up to 13 month longer than expected, saving $75,000 to $100,000 a year. The estimated savings for the Medicare and Medicaid programs that cover these costs is $6.8 million a year.
