As discussed in the previous post, Medication Non-Adherence is a major healthcare issue in the US. It is estimated that the yearly cost of medication non-adherence in the US is $300 billion. The 3 parts of proper medication administration are:
- Medication Adherence – The patient’s conformance with respect to timing, dosage and frequency of medication taking
- Compliance – The patient’s passive following of the provider’s orders
- Persistence – The duration of time the patient takes the medication from initiation to discontinuation
